As I write this I am sitting in a hotel in Atlanta, Ga. I am in Atlanta to work with a group of University Students on spring break missions to Atlanta. The students from Campbell University's Baptist Student Union arrived yesterday.
While waiting on our missionaries to arrive I went into the neighborhood we will be ministering. It is a typical small town neighborhood with lots of apartments, single family homes, schools, library, and churches. However a closer look will show you the inhabitants of this community are not from the United States. As I drove through the community I noticed people from India, Nepal, Bhutan, Somalia, walking the streets and carrying on life as normal. Closer research has revealed that this community has approximately 5000 families who are refugees from their homeland. There are another 20,000 people expected in the future.
The students from Campbell University will be working with men, women, and children in various activities including tutoring english, food and clothing distribution, and relationship building.
Thanks to the generosity of the students at Campbell, The Union Mission, and private individuals the food and clothing will be distributed to people very much in need. Just imagine coming from the other side of the world with no money, furniture, or friends and settling into suburban Atlanta with all the culture shock as well as expensive cost of living.
I am excited about the opportunity for these students. If you are reading this, please stop for a moment and say a prayer for these fine young adults who have given their spring break to help others.
